staring at a bright light source and closing eyes to see a bright patch : A signal processing based explanation

(...I apologize if this question is not apt in here..)

Normally when i stare at a bright light source, for example tube light in a room, for some time and close my eyes I see a bright patch in the shape of the light source in spite of the eyes being closed and this lasts for a few (sometimes many) seconds. I'd appreciate a possible signal processing based approach to explain this phenomenon.
