I have heard the word "diffusion" in the context of image processing and computer vision. However, images are discrete and I associate the word "diffusion" with a continuous process. Intuitively, what do we mean by "diffusion" in the context of images?

There is the anisotropic diffusion (which I think is related to an isotropic operator), which is a "diffusion" which does not act equally in all directions of the image (as opposed to a isotropic operator).
