May 9, 2023 at 13:21 comment added Atsushi Sakai As the two URLs in my initial question indicate, some textbooks I've read mention that Singular Value Decomposition (SVD) can be used for image compression as an application example. After seeing this, I simply wondered how practical and applicable it is in real-world applications.

May 7, 2023 at 9:01 comment added Marcus Müller So, what is the technical motivation why you think PCA would be suitable for still image compression? This is what is confusing here. I can invent an algorithm, and demand other people prove that it's bad, but that would be unfair – I am the one proposing the algorithm, so I need to at least indicate why I think it's a good idea. So, please indicate why you think PCA is a good idea. That's your job as asker of the question "why is it not used?".
May 7, 2023 at 8:42 comment added Marcus Müller we really don't do questions asking for opionions here – in fact, that's off-topic – but you're right to ask for technical justification!

May 6, 2023 at 19:25 comment added Marcus Müller My question is the SVD based image compression is popular for actual applications now? I don't know all image encoders out there, but I'm not aware of a single one that uses SVD. That probably means the cons are "model doesn't fit the data, hence leads to bad compression".
